Should your Vietnam holiday include Phu Quoc, or should you spend those days exploring the mainland? The useful question is what you want those days to feel like: beach and island activities, city sightseeing, or a mixture. Adding an island changes the travel plan as well as the destination list.
Start by comparing the daily schedules in our Vietnam tour packages. Two holidays of the same length can have very different amounts of free time once flights, airport transfers and excursions are counted.
Choose the experience before the route
Phu Quoc is an island option for travellers interested in beaches and coastal activities. Vietnam’s official tourism website highlights its beaches, night market and island excursions. It identifies November to April as the dry-season beach window, while weather and sea conditions still need checking for your travel dates.
A mainland-focused trip may suit you better if city walks, historic sights and regional excursions lead your wish list. An island-inclusive route may suit you if coastal experiences are a priority. Neither label guarantees a leisurely schedule: read the actual programme.
| Your priority | What to check |
|---|---|
| Beach downtime | Unscheduled hours at the island hotel, rather than assuming an excursion day is a rest day. |
| City and cultural sightseeing | Which mainland stops remain in the route and how much time each receives. |
| Activities for the whole family | Excursion choices, age or height restrictions, walking and the alternative for anyone opting out. |
| Fewer travel interruptions | Number of flights, airport transfers, hotel changes and luggage movements. |
Understand what the Phu Quoc package actually covers
LPO’s published Vietnam with Phu Quoc itinerary combines the island with Da Nang, Hanoi and Halong Bay. Its detailed day-by-day programme begins in Phu Quoc and later travels to the mainland. Read the daily schedule when confirming the route order, rather than relying only on the overview.
The island excursion is presented as a choice between two programmes. Ask which one you will take, what is included, and whether everyone in your party needs to select the same option. Do not assume that every attraction mentioned across the alternatives is included in one day.
Make room for flights and transfers
For every internal flight, allow for the journey to the airport, check-in, the flight itself and the onward transfer. A short flight does not mean only a short interruption to sightseeing. Avoid building a personal must-do activity immediately around an unconfirmed flight schedule.
Ask whether checked baggage is included on every flight and whether allowances differ between sectors. Confirm how the group handles luggage when a cruise stay interrupts the hotel sequence. Keep essentials available in a small bag where the operator recommends it.
Check the Halong Bay arrangements separately
A day cruise and an overnight cruise create different schedules. Confirm which is included, the cabin or seating arrangement, meals, transfer arrangements and the airport connection after the cruise. Check the written details rather than assuming the arrangements match another Vietnam itinerary you have seen.
If an overnight cruise is important to you, make it a specific requirement in your enquiry. If you prefer fewer accommodation changes, ask the team to explain the sequence of hotel and cruise nights before deciding.
Build a quotation you can compare fairly
List international and internal flights, baggage, airport transfers, hotels, cruise arrangements, meals, attraction admissions and optional activities. Then compare the quotations line by line. Ask what happens if weather affects a boat excursion and which alternative or cancellation terms apply.
Dietary needs also deserve a clear answer. Confirm which meals are provided and where you will choose your own food. “Meals included” should be checked against the daily meal plan rather than read as every meal throughout the trip.
Which Vietnam route should you shortlist?
Choose an island-inclusive route when Phu Quoc’s experiences justify the travel time for your party. Choose a mainland route when the places it visits matter more to you than adding an island. If you want both extensive sightseeing and generous beach downtime, ask whether a longer holiday would fit better than compressing the same wish list.
