Best Time to See the Northern Lights

How to Choose a Lapland Tour: Arctic Nights, Activities and Costs

A Lapland holiday is easier to compare when you look beyond the total trip length. Count where you sleep, how evenings are organised, and how much of the programme matches your interests. A Finland sightseeing tour, a Lapland stay and a wider Northern Lights journey can have different goals.

Use this checklist when comparing Finland and Lapland tour packages. It focuses on route selection and booking questions, so you can judge the written itinerary rather than relying on an aurora photograph or a destination name.

Count nights in the relevant destination

Mark every overnight location on the itinerary. Then separate city sightseeing nights from time in the Arctic part of the journey. A longer overall holiday does not automatically provide more evenings in the place where you hope to see the Northern Lights.

Visit Finland explains that aurora viewing requires darkness and clear skies, and that cloud cover can prevent a sighting. More available evenings can give you more opportunities to try, but no itinerary can guarantee the natural display. Choose a holiday whose daytime experiences you would enjoy as well.

Ask what an aurora outing means

Look for the number of organised outings, their approximate duration, transport arrangements and whether the guide can change location according to conditions. An evening at your hotel, a fixed viewing location and a guided search are different experiences.

Ask what happens if weather prevents an outing from operating. Distinguish the operator’s cancellation terms from the possibility that a tour runs but the lights do not appear. These are separate situations and should be explained before you pay.

Compare a focused stay with a wider route

Planning preferenceQuestion to ask
Spend more time around one baseHow many consecutive nights are at the same hotel, and which activities are accessible from it?
See several destinationsHow much of each day is used by road, rail or air transfers?
Prioritise aurora outingsWhich evenings are available, which outings are included, and which cost extra?
Enjoy varied daytime sightseeingWhich activities interest your group even if the lights do not appear?

Compare the route maps in our Northern Lights tour packages with the Finland options. If a broader regional journey appeals to you, also review the Scandinavia tour collection. The destination names alone do not establish how much time a particular departure spends in Lapland.

Check winter activities one by one

For each listed experience, ask whether it is included, optional or simply a suggested possibility. Confirm the duration and the activity itself: a visit to a venue can differ from taking part in a ride or guided excursion. Check relevant age, height or operator restrictions for your party.

Discuss the alternative for anyone who prefers to sit an activity out. This matters when a family contains different interests or comfort levels. Also ask whether excursions leave enough time for meals and a rest before a late evening programme.

Understand clothing and accommodation arrangements

Request a packing list for your dates and ask which outdoor clothing or equipment, if any, is supplied. Clarify whether supplied items are available throughout the stay or only during a particular excursion. Visit Finland recommends dressing in layers for cold viewing conditions.

If special accommodation is part of your wish list, check the exact room category, number of nights and whether it replaces a standard hotel night or is an additional option. A photograph of a glass-roofed room does not establish that this room is included in every package.

Compare the full cost from India

Request a written breakdown covering international and domestic transport, baggage, transfers, hotels, meals, guided outings, activity equipment, optional excursions and any additional charges. Confirm the departure airport and group joining arrangements if you are travelling from another Indian city.

Read the payment and cancellation schedule alongside the itinerary. Ask which elements are confirmed at booking and which remain subject to availability. Keep the version of the itinerary attached to your quotation so that you can compare any later changes clearly.

Send a clear enquiry

Give LPO Holidays your departure city, travel month, group size, preferred trip length and three essential experiences. State whether you prefer fewer hotel changes or a wider route, and whether special accommodation is essential or optional. That makes it easier to match you to a suitable package.

Start with the current Finland tour options, then compare the overnight locations and included experiences using this checklist.
